Why You Should Purchase a Domain Name for Your eBay Business

October 19, 2007

What in the world is a domain name, you ask? A domain name (or URL) is simply a web address. For example, the domain name for Google is www.google.com. Clear? Good, we thought so.

You might want to consider purchasing the web address/domain name (www.YourBusinessName.com) that is also your business name. For example, if your business is Acme Trading Inc., you might want to purchase the domain name www.acmetrading.com (assuming it is available). Having a domain name gives your business a certain cachet, a certain air of professionalism.

You might also want to consider having your eBay User ID match your domain name as well, to tie all of the elements together. Therefore, do your research before you settle on a business name and try to come up with something in which both the domain name and eBay User ID are available, if at all possible. It also helps if the domain name and eBay User ID are catchy and memorable.

You can purchase a domain from a domain name registrar such as GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy.com is who we use and we have been very happy with them. Not to mention, they offer domain name registration at very affordable prices.

Once you have your domain name, you can easily have that domain point to your eBay Store with domain forwarding. Domain forwarding is simply where your customers enter your domain name (www.YourBusinessName.com) and are redirected to a different website (such as your eBay Store). This is handy when you own a domain name but do not have a stand-alone website of your own. You can direct customers to your eBay Store when they enter your domain name into their web browser. All you’ll need to do is tell them to visit you at www.YourBusinessName.com. This helps customers find your eBay Store quickly and easily.

Remember, if you want to be professional, and want to make it easy for your customers to find you, then having a catchy and memorable domain name (and eBay User ID) is the way to go!

GoDaddy is awesome. We register most of our domains through them.

If you already have domain name can you use the exact same name as your eBay user ID? I tried once to sign as a new user at eBay using my domain name, but was refused that name as it was already used. However, I could not find a user of that name when doing an advanced search. The best way to get around that was to add a couple of numbers to the domain name.

Here is what eBay has to say about using and email address or domain name as your user ID: “What You Can’t Include in a User ID: Elements that imply an email address or Web address (for example, xyz.com), including but not limited to .com, .net, .org, .edu, or any variation of such (for example, _com or -com). Your User ID can, however, contain an element of an email address or Web address (URL) that, when viewed outside the context of the email address or Web address, identifies you or your brand (for example, xyz).”

So you cannot use the “www” or the “.com, etc” part of our domain name. Therefore, strictly speaking, you cannot use your exact domain name as your user eBay User ID. However, you can use the part in the middle that is really the important part of your domain name.

Very interesting that eBay didn’t like the domain name you tried to use. There must have been something they didn’t like about it, since you couldn’t find another user with the ID already. eBay has their reasons and sometimes they don’t share why…

If I have a domain name and I want to be a seller on ebay, can I use a different store name and user ID name and link to my domain name?
The domain name is not exactly what I want it to be. Do you understand what I mean? I am a new ebay seller just setting up and not sure which way to go with the name situation.
Thanks, Doris

Hi Doris,

We think we understand what you mean.

Your domain name (URL) does not need to be the same as your eBay ID or eBay Store name. We just suggest that it be the same, or similar, just to help with your branding.

There is nothing to stop you from having your domain be http://www.happydays.com and your eBay ID to be LittleDaisy, for example.

You can always come up with a cleaver eBay ID and/or Store name that isn’t taken yet and then see if the domain is available also. Domains are so inexpensive that you aren’t going to have to make a huge investment in one.

Just make sure once you have settled on a domain name to use, and you have an eBay Store, to point your domain name to the web address (URL) of your eBay Store. This way, when someone types in your domain name, they go directly to your eBay Store.

Whomever you purchased your domain name through should be able to help you do the redirect.
