Should You Sell New Items or Used Items on eBay?

October 29, 2007

One of the first decisions you are going to face as a seller is what to sell. But even before you can tackle that forbidding task, you have a simpler decision to make. Should you sell new items or should you sell used items?

Do you want to sell only new product or do you enjoy roaming second-hand stores, antique malls and local garage sales? There are those of you who would enjoy the challenge of finding that perfect, used product to put in your eBay Store. If so, maybe this is the way to go. However, as we will address later, this will make your job selling that much harder.

Selling new retail items is a fairly straightforward process, but is much easier said than done. On the surface, it’s as simple as finding a product that will sell well, finding a source for this product and then creating a listing for the product that you can use over and over again. In reality, it is a much more involved process than this, which we will cover in other blog postings.

Selling used product appeals to some, but it has its own set of issues. While we have a little experience selling used items, our strength lies in selling new retail items. This is generally the easiest way to go.

The distinct disadvantage to selling used product is that each and every listing is unique. You will spend an inordinate amount of time taking quality pictures and creating professional listings. You will spend all kinds of time locating used product to sell and you will soon realize selling new items might be a more appropriate use of your valuable time. Remember, time is money!

However, if you specialize in selling used items that have a higher value, then you will find it possible to be compensated for the amount of time it takes to create a unique listing for each item. If you choose to sell used items on eBay, make sure you only sell items with a high enough profit margin to make it worth your time.

As you can see, selling on eBay requires all sorts of choices and executive decision making. Once you think you have everything figured out, along comes something that requires you to make a decision. Choosing to sell new versus used items on eBay might not be as easy as it seems.

Maybe you should try selling both new and used to see what fits you best. Nobody says that you cannot sell a bit of both. You will soon find out that eBay affords you the opportunity to experiment with your selling practices. After all, this is one of the things that makes eBay the great marketplace that it is!
