How to Start Your Great eBay Selling Adventure
October 17, 2007If you have never sold on eBay, the very first thing you need to do is sell something on eBay. Now this would seem like the simple, logical thing to do, right? So go ahead and just do it. Reason being, you will want to test out the waters before you plunge headfirst into the eBay-selling pond. It would be silly if you went through all the steps to set up your business the legal and right way only to find that selling on eBay is not the thing for you.
Maybe you have been buying on eBay for awhile, but have never taken that step to actually sell something on the world’s greatest marketplace. Now that you are thinking about making some money on eBay, instead of spending it, you need to figure out what you are going to sell. The most frequently given advice is to sell something you have around your house you no longer want/need. Take, for example, that gift you got for Christmas ten years ago from your Aunt June. Maybe that would be a great thing to sell. All you need to do is sell what you would deem as “junk” (or something you no longer have an attachment to.) Keep in mind, you don’t have to make $1,000 on your first sale; you just want to make a sale!
This is exactly how we started our great eBay adventure. We scraped together some “junk” that we had lying around the house and threw these items up on eBay. After all, as the saying goes, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
Surprisingly enough, our “junk” found new homes and we were hooked. The rest, as they say, is history.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the kind words! Keep checking back as we have some more great articles coming your way.
That seems like a pretty common starting point. Sell some of your own junk, but then what? I’ve found that searching out other peoples’ junk at Garage Sales. Markets etc to be very useful. But you need to be very discerning about what you choose to sell. Researching on eBay’s completed listings is great for working out what to look for.
Garage sales, flea markets or thrift shops are definitely one option for product sourcing. We will be covering other ways to find merchandise, especially new merchandise, in future posts.
