Finding Products to Sell For Enough Profit to Make it Worth Your Time
December 3, 2007We hate to sound like a broken record, but selling on eBay is hard, hard work. Being a successful eBay seller is even harder work. It is extremely difficult to figure out a system that works for you that will keep bringing in the money, month after month.
Anyone can have short-term success on eBay. The sellers that have built up a sustainable business model are much harder to come by. It really isn’t as easy as those full-page ads in your local newspaper make it out to be.
Part of the problem that a new eBay Seller will run into is finding the right product to sell. It is very easy to get sucked into selling items for $3.99 and think that you are well on the path to riches. Heck, you are just happy that you are making a sale when you are starting out. Who cares if you are actually making any money?
After selling the $3.99 items for a few months, it might begin to sink in that you are just spinning your wheels. You, indeed, are not on the path to riches. You are well on your way to becoming yet another mediocre eBay seller.
Now this last statement will probably infuriate many eBay sellers whose domain is the inexpensive items. Maybe you can make a successful business of selling trinkets for $3.99, but we don’t know how. Let us explain.
We opened this blog post with the mantra you will hear from us all of the time: Selling on eBay is hard work. Why would you want to be selling a product that will only make your job that much harder?
Think of it this way: It takes the exact same amount of time to sell an item for $300 as it does to sell your $3.99 trinket. You have to create a quality listing for both items. You have to pack and ship both items. You have to process the same amount of paperwork for both items.
You only have so many hours in a day; only so many days in your life; only a finite amount of time to spread out amongst all of life’s activities. Don’t you want to make the most out of the time that you spend in your eBay ventures? By this, we mean, don’t you want to be compensated as much as possible for the hard work that you put into your business?
We strongly advocate that you sell as many high value items as you can. You need to make sure that you are very fairly compensated for the effort that you put into your business. The only way that you can do this is by getting as much profit as you possibly can from each item you sell.
There is more to it than just selling items for a large dollar figure. You have to make sure that you are actually making a large profit. It is very easy to sell a product at any price point for what you paid for it, or even worse, for less than what you paid for it. If you paid $100 for that item you are selling for $100, how can you expect to survive?
You have to find a product that you can sell for a higher dollar figure that still has a good profit margin. The only way you can do this is to sell a product that is in demand on eBay, the market isn’t already saturated with this product and you have a great source for this product at an excellent price.
We have found that to sustain a viable eBay business, we need to sell products at the $25 and above price point. This means that we are making at least $10 on each and every item we sell. Hopefully we will be making more than this, but that is the baseline that we have established for ourselves.
The bottom line is that you have to find the right mix of products to sell at a high enough price point to make it worth your while. Otherwise, you are just wasting your time trying to make a go at selling on eBay.
