eBay User IDs – What’s in a name?
October 16, 2007You are who you are. Pretty profound, isn’t it? What we really mean by this is you are what your eBay User ID is. Or more precisely, your eBay User ID represents you, the seller.
Let’s face it, your eBay User ID is what you are known by in the eBay community. Your name might be Tom Smith, but on eBay you can be known as tigerlilly9797. However, if you are running a business as an eBay seller, you might want to give a bit more consideration and thought to your eBay User ID then you might have otherwise. After all, your eBay User ID will be the face of your company.
Ideally, your eBay User ID should be something that ties in with your company. If your company is named The Gilded Lily, then maybe you would choose the eBay User ID “thegildedlily” or “gildedlily”, if your first choice is taken. (Of course, in this example, both of these IDs are taken.) Our creative juices just aren’t flowing enough right now to come up with something so unique that nobody has thought of it yet. And we don’t want to do all the work for you.
Another way to look at what eBay User ID to use is to come up with a User ID that describes what you sell. Say you want to sell widgets online. Why not choose the eBay User ID “widgetsrus”? See how this ties in to what you are selling? You want to have a User ID that is memorable and distinguished and allows you to stand out from the crowd (and believe us, it is real crowded.) Try to steer clear of using underscore lines to separate words because this will only confuse the buyer and make it harder for him/her to find you on eBay. It is usually best to have the User ID be all one word that runs together, like “widgetsrus” or “thegildedlily”, etc. Also, eBay does not allow you to use any capital letters in the User ID.
The bottom line is, you should try and come up with an eBay User ID that is not only professional, but actually describes what you/your company is, or what you/your company sells (as close as possible, anyway.) Be as professional and creative as you can be. You will only benefit from this. Remember that your eBay User ID is yet another way to help brand you/your company.

Thanks for the post. I sold on eBay professionally for several years and realized (back in 2000) that my user ID wasn’t good enough. After changing it to a better ID, my sales went up. Nobody wants to see llkut445 as the seller. They would much rather see shoebuys or something like that. Anyway, I agree with you and thought I would leave a little comment to tell you.

This is a perfect example of what we are talking about in the post. Your eBay ID should be something more memorable than a bunch of random words and numbers. It should also reflect either your company’s name or what you sell.
Thanks for the real world example, Bill!
