It’s Official! Meg is Retiring From Role as eBay CEO
January 23, 2008It’s official! Meg Whitman has announced that she will be retiring from her role as eBay CEO effective 31 March 2008. John Donahoe, current head of eBay Marketplaces, will be replacing Meg as the new eBay CEO.
Meg has been the CEO of eBay for almost 10 years now and she has, in the past, said that a leader should only stay around for a decade. Guess she is practicing what she preaches.
eBay has evolved tremendously over the past decade under Meg’s leadership, going from a very small auction site to the world’s largest marketplace that it is currently. Let’s hope that John is able to guide eBay in a direction that is beneficial to both eBay buyers AND sellers so that we can continue to have a viable marketplace to make a living from.
On a side note, but nonetheless important, Bill Cobb will be stepping down as President of eBay North America at the end of 2008.
Great changes are afoot at eBay. It will be very interesting to see what changes (hopefully positive) come out of this corporate reshuffling. Hopefully, for those of us making money on eBay, it will all be good in the end!
