How eBay and PayPal Fees Play Into Your Profit Picture
November 27, 2007When you sell on eBay, you are going to have to make sure that you take into consideration the direct costs of selling on eBay. These include eBay fees and PayPal fees (or fees from whatever payment processing system you may be using). As explained in a previous post, these fees would be factored into your gross profit calculations.
eBay fees are broken down into insertion fees and final value fees. In other words, you have to pay eBay once for the privilege of listing an item on their website, and again when the item sells.
The eBay insertion fees are a flat amount depending on the starting price and the final value fees are a percentage of the final selling price. The higher the starting and selling price the more eBay charges you.
PayPal transaction fees are charged if you use PayPal as the method of receiving payment. If you use another service to receive payment, then they more than likely charge a fee as well. About the only way you can get away from paying a payment processing fee is by accepting only personal checks or money orders.
PayPal charges a flat transaction fee ($0.30 at the time of this writing) plus a percentage of the amount of money you receive from the eBay transaction.
PayPal has special, discounted fees for merchants that receive a higher volume of payments via PayPal. These PayPal Merchant Rates offer a discount depending on the dollar amount of monthly payments you receive via PayPal. The minimum monthly dollar volume you have to accept via PayPal to be eligible for these special rates is $3,000. The higher your monthly volume is, the lower percentage PayPal charges you for each transaction. You must apply to receive these discounted rates, assuming your monthly volume is sufficient for you to be eligible.
eBay and PayPal fees are the cost of doing business on the world’s greatest marketplace. To put these fees into perspective, think of the eBay fees as being comparable to rent paid by a conventional brick and mortar retailer. Regardless of what kind of a retailer you are, you are going to have to pay a fee to accept credit card payments which, as an eBay seller, are your PayPal fees.
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the fees you have to pay in order to sell on eBay and to accept payments via PayPal. These fees affect your gross profit, which is one of the indicators as to how well your eBay business is doing. Because of this, it is very important to be aware of the various fees you are charged for the privilege of doing business on eBay.
