Why You Should have an eBay About Me Page

October 25, 2007

Everyone who either sells or buys on eBay can have an About Me page. This is a single web page associated with your eBay ID that serves as a place where you can tell the eBay Community about yourself.

As a business owner, having an About Me page is fairly important as it is the place to tell the eBay Community, and therefore your prospective customers, a little about your company and yourself. It is a great marketing tool and, if done right, will lead to more eBay sales.

It’s amazing how many eBay sellers do not have an About Me page. We are not really sure why this is, as it does serve as a great way to market you and your business.

Your About Me page is also the only place on eBay you can legally have links to the outside world. That is, you can have a link to an off-eBay e-commerce website, if you have one, or a link to your company blog or other marketing tool. eBay does not allow you to have such links inside of your individual listings, where they could really come in handy, so having these links on your About Me page is the best you can do.

Be sure to include a little about your company and yourself, and you can even include a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section, as well as a picture of yourself (as we have done), on your About Me page.

Your About Me page is really a great place to show the eBay world a little bit of your personality. However, don’t go overboard; you need to remember this is still a business you are running and you need to project your image as professionally as possible. That means you probably shouldn’t be posting pictures of yourself doing the limbo dressed as an elf.

If you are selling on eBay, or want to start selling on eBay, now is a great time to put a little thought into your About Me page. Remember to be creative because this is a way to brand yourself/your business. And have some fun while doing it. Most importantly, just have an About Me page!

Ebay has been very frustrating for me. I have had it for about a year and even pay some monthly fee (not cheap) to have some higher level ebay stuff. Have considered many times in shutting it down completely. ONLY have 70 feedbacks in a year! Should I just shut it down?

You do pose an interesting question. When do you shut down your eBay selling venture? Should you shut it down or is there something that you can be doing differently.

It is hard to say in your case, since we don’t have any information about what you sell, how you sell it, the competition in your niche, etc.

You might want to sign up for your newsletter in the top right of this blog. Doing so will allow you to download our FREE, 58-page e-book about selling on eBay. You should be able to pick up some pointers from our e-book that will give you a direction to take.

We wish you the best of luck in improving your eBay sales! Keep checking back with us on this blog. We will be covering what we have learned while selling on eBay.

I sell my own products (new), but I think most people on ebay are looking for a cheap deal. I don’t sell my products any cheaper than on my site, but I thought ebay would get me a different market reach. But it didn’t. I pay something like $40 a month. How can I shut this down without shutting my page down? I am obviously not getting my money back each month  !

Yes, people shopping on eBay do seem to always be looking for a bargain. This is one of the reasons why it pays to really do your research when it comes to figuring out what to sell on eBay. The key is to find something that sells well on eBay, doesn’t have much competition, and allows you a decent profit. Piece of cake, right?

If you are selling the same stuff that you are selling on your website, then maybe there is not any market for instructional DVDs on eBay. We don’t know, as we have never explored this market. Or maybe you need to re-examine your ad copy in your eBay listings. Price might not be that big of a factor as the prices on your website are definitely reasonable (or so we think!).

What do you mean by “shut this down without shutting my page down?” If you mean shut down your eBay sales and keep your About Me page up, that is perfectly doable. Anybody can have an About Me page – you don’t have to be a seller.

If you mean you want to stop spending $40 per month to sell your items, you have two choices:

1. You mentioned that you pay extra for “higher level eBay stuff”. We assume you mean extras above and beyond the basic eBay Store. Cut back on the extras and just keep your basic eBay Store for $15.95 a month.

2. You can cancel your eBay Store altogether (assuming you have one) and just list the products one at a time in auction or fixed price format. This might not be the wisest choice as you had mentioned your sales are slow. The listing fees will kill you doing this, so it would be cheaper to just keep stuff listed in your store.

This brings up a good question. Assuming you have an eBay Store, do you just have your items listed there, or are you also selling in the Auction and/or Fixed Price formats?

We don’t think it is time to throw in the towel now. But we do have some suggestions.

You are selling your items in your store. We did a quick search on eBay for “golf dvd” and there are currently 285 items with those words in their title. We then looked at the sell through rate (learn how to do this in our e-book) and noticed that instructional DVDs sell fairly well on eBay.

It looks like your problem is with people finding your listings because they are all in your store. When people search for items, store listings end up at the bottom. So when there are hundreds of items for a search term, store listings are never seen. Try doing some fixed price listings so that you can be found more easily.

You can also check your eBay Store stats to see how much traffic you get on a daily and monthly basis to your Store. This will give you an idea if putting up fixed price listings will drive more traffic to your Store. We suspect they will.

Also, we suggest you spruce up your listing ad copy a bit. We would embed a sample of the DVDs directly into your listing. You already have the samples, as they show up in your e-commerce store. The easiest way to do this is to upload the video clips to YouTube and then embed the YouTube video into your listing. You might also attract some customers who viewed your videos directly on YouTube!

Now thru November 5th, eBay is having a sale on Fixed Price and Auction fees. They are 30% off, so now is a great time to throw up some Fixed Price listings and watch the orders pour in!

It looks like you have a great product. Your main problem is your visibility. It is very hard to sell items that are only listed in your eBay Store.

Also, spruce up your listings a bit more. Add the video clips and maybe expand on what they are getting in your DVDs.

We have confidence that there is a market for your goods. People just need to be able to find you.

Good luck!

Okay…you are over my head  . I don’t know where to begin…LOL. I am not too familiar with how ebay works, and I have been so out of it for a long time. I thought I can’t do fixed pricing til I get 100 positive feedbacks?

To be quite honest, I was holding on to see if I could get to a 100 since I have 75 now. But I sell nothing so it would be 2030 before I hit that mark  .

Any help in getting more sales would be VERY much appreciated, but I know you are very busy (making your own money) with your concerns; but I do thank you sincerely for your time. It is very gracious of you!

You can start selling via Fixed Price once you have 5 or 10 feedback, or get ID verified. Either way, you have plenty of feedback to start selling via Fixed Price!

100 feedback is the magical number to become a PowerSeller, and maybe other stuff that is slipping our minds right now. Of course, you need to get your sales up before you are a PowerSeller, so now is the time to start doing some Fixed Price listings.

Remember, Christmas buying season is upon us. NOW is the time to start driving traffic to your listings/store. The only way to do that is via Fixed Price listings.

Spruce up your listings, which shouldn’t take very long, and then get your Fixed Price listings up while the sale is still on.

We are confident you can sell your items as you have a product that most likely has a fairly high demand. And the best part is that it is your own product. Nobody else is selling it. You are in the ideal situation!

Let us know how it works out for you. Good luck!

Okay…last question I promise  . How do I do a fixed price listing?

No problem. When you list an item on eBay, you have three choices. You can list the item as a store item, which is how all of your items are currently listed. The other two options are a traditional auction (where you set the starting price and watch people place bids and drive up the price) and fixed price listing. Both auction and fixed price show up first when somebody does a search on eBay. Store listings show up at the very end.

You do a fixed price listing the same way you do a store listing, except you choose fixed price (instead of store) as your listing type. You used eBay Turbo Lister to get the current listings up. You can use Turbo Lister to also put up fixed price listings. Again, all you do is choose fixed price as the listing type.

You can have a 3, 5, 7 or 10-day fixed price listing. The cost is the same for a 3, 5 or 7-day listing. eBay charges an extended listing fee for a 10-day listing because your listing is up/active longer. You can experiment with the different listing durations to see what works best for you.

Your listings will show up closer to the top when somebody does a search when there is less time left. In other words, a fixed price listing, or an auction, with 3 minutes left will be displayed before a listing with 3-days left. Hopefully that makes sense.

It is really easy to do a fixed price listing if you have already done a store listing. No worries!
